Ever since I was a kid Spring has always meant something special to me. Certainly not as important as the Christmas Season but right up there next to it. When I was growing up it meant that we could begin to enjoy all of the outdoor activities without it being too hot and sweaty or too cold to be outdoors. It also was a turning point for the year. The air was different. The flowers, trees and grasses took on that wonderful green hue. And all was right with the world.
Then….after reaching a certain degree of adulthood (I don’t believe I have ever reached even close to full maturity) Spring had a different meaning. Oh…..It still had the same degree of change for the better. But there were different activities. March Madness, the opening of baseball’s Spring Training, the beginning of the Major Golf season, outdoor grilling and dining, and FIESTA !
Beginning a few weeks ago all of that changed with the introduction of the CV (I don’t want to use the name of Coronavirus as that is now a dirty word to me). The directives given by our Mayor, County Judge, Governor and President have led me into a different mindset, particularly as it relates to thoughts of Spring activities. The restrictions that we HAVE TO ADHERE TO eliminated the wonderful thoughts and feelings of Spring. Until………..
I went outside for a short walk and Voila ! I found that some old fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are a tonic for the soul. It also brought about the realization that THIS IS SPRING ! The only difference this year is that we are faced with a dangerous inconvenience that WILL PASS. All of the Spring activities of years past have now been POSTPONED. They are not gone forever, just postponed, and we now have and will always have a Spring. So I leave with this thought…………
Wait. Be Patient. The Storm Wll Pass.
And Spring Will Always Come.
I BELIEVE THAT WE ARE IN THE MIDST OF AN EVOLUTION,
NOT REVOLUTION, BUT EVOLUTION.
I’m 88 years of age. So I vividly remember Sunday, December 7, 1941 and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. And the days that followed where most people were tremendously frightened and concerned about the days ahead. The food and gasoline rationing, shortages of EVERYTHING if it was available at all. My mother and the other ladies in the neighborhood getting together to wrap bandages. My buddies and I going out to the vacant area where the Coliseum and AT&T Center is now located and gathering scrap metal for the “War Effort”. A real treat was to go to Klingers and get a hamburger maybe once a month. Saving the nickels and dimes that we had earned from working at Piggly Wiggly and doing odd jobs and mowing lawns so we could buy $ 25 War Bonds. Vivid Memories of very difficult and frightening times.
However, I also remember neighbors getting together to go out on the front porch to wait for the “evening breeze”. A friendly, hopeful and caring group of neighbors. Kind and gentle people. KIND AND GENTLE PEOPLE !
I can’t help but compare our circumstances that we are experiencing today with that of the World War II era. Great fears, inconveniences and questions. Problems brought about by something that was totally unforeseen by the average person. And like Wold War II…THIS TOO SHALL PASS.
I am also seeing a change in people and their attitudes. I can’t help but believe, and hope, that we are witnessing a transformation into a “Kinder and Gentler” society. Sure….we will continue to have anxieties and fears about the present and what the future will bring. But in the meantime, I am hopeful, and CONFIDENT, that our problems of today will also EVOLVE into a KINDER AND GENTLER SOCIETY.
“ BE LOVING – BE PATIENT – BE KIND – BE GENTLE “
BE SAFE AND BE HAPPY…….
At some point in time I believe that we all wonder how long we’re going to live. We all are going to ask that question, either of ourselves or of our higher power. And you know what the answer will be ? The inevitable answer will ALWAYS be……..Nobody on this earth knows. And isn’t it great that we don’t know ? If we knew most of us would have a completely different agenda. It would force us into making decisions based on the knowledge of our scheduled death. And maybe not in the best interests of our friends, family, community, society or even ourselves.
I believe that the realization of this fact……even though we don’t have ANY IDEA when our death is going to be, IT IS INEVITABLE . That should lead us into making decisions and living our life today as if tomorrow is going to be THE DAY. Be kinder and gentler, display the love that you have for others, whether it be for family, friends, acquaintances or that homeless guy that is panhandling on the corner. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone would adopt this philosophy and attitude ? We probably would not recognize the world in which we live.
Remember…..”Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours”.
BE SAFE AND BE HAPPY !
